EPL: Chelsea Pile More Misery On Man U With 2-0 Victory

Chelsea compounded Manchester United’s difficult start to the season with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, handing Michael Carrick’s side their third consecutive defeat in all competitions.

United’s latest loss leaves them without a win in nine matches across all competitions, their longest winless run since October-November 1988.

The defeat, their fourth in the Premier League this season, leaves United 16th on the table, just one point above the relegation zone, increasing pressure on Carrick as questions mount over his ability to turn the team’s fortunes around.

Despite an encouraging first-half display, United fell behind five minutes after the restart when Morgan Rogers capitalised on poor defending to break through the visitors’ defence and chip the ball past the goalkeeper.

Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 64th minute after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed an incident involving United defender Lisandro Martinez and Wesley Fofana.

Martinez, who was not looking at the ball, struck Fofana in the face with his arm, prompting the referee to award a penalty and send off the Argentine defender after showing him a second yellow card.

Cole Palmer converted the resulting spot kick to give Chelsea a commanding two-goal lead and leave United with little chance of recovering.

Chelsea almost extended their advantage when Estevao found the net, but his effort was ruled out for a marginal offside.

United had enjoyed several opportunities before the break, with Matheus Cunha having a close-range header disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Bruno Fernandes also missed a promising opportunity, while Amad Diallo failed twice to beat Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders in one-on-one situations.

However, United struggled to reproduce their first-half performance after the interval, allowing Chelsea to take control of the encounter.

Rogers’ opener provided the hosts with the breakthrough they needed, while Martinez’s dismissal further weakened the visitors and made Chelsea’s task easier.

Chelsea also threatened to add to their tally through Estevao, while substitute Valentin Barco missed a late opportunity to increase the margin.

United forward Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar in stoppage time, but the visitors could not find a consolation goal.

The result lifts Chelsea into fourth position in the Premier League standings, while United remain 16th and face the possibility of dropping into the relegation zone before the end of the weekend.
