Jonas Björkman has been named the new Davis Cup captain for the Swedish men’s national team, signing a contract that keeps him in the role through August 2029. The 54-year-old tennis icon takes over leadership of the squad immediately, with his first official duties beginning at next week’s Stockholm Open, according to reporting by Aftonbladet.
Björkman brings significant experience to the position, having represented Sweden in the Davis Cup 14 times during his playing career—a record for a Swedish player. During those appearances, he secured three tournament titles. At his peak, Björkman reached a world ranking of number four in singles and number one in doubles.
Beyond his playing tenure, Björkman has established a career in coaching, working with high-profile players including Andy Murray, Marin Cilic, Mirjam Björklund, and most recently, Gabriel Diallo. According to Mynewsdesk, Swedish Tennis Association chairman Ulf Rosberg noted that Björkman’s ongoing work on the professional tour provides him with a valuable, modern connection to the international game.
The new captain’s debut will take place on home soil. Sweden is scheduled to face Ukraine in a Davis Cup Play Off tie from February 6–7, 2027. The matches will be held at the Royal Tennis Hall (Kungl. Tennishallen) in Stockholm.
Micaela Hjelm, club manager at the Royal Lawn Tennis Club (KLTK), confirmed this will mark the 21st time the venue has hosted a Davis Cup tie since 1960. Tickets for the February event are expected to be released in mid-November, as reported by Mynewsdesk.
Björkman emphasized that his immediate priority is establishing a rapport with the players and their personal coaching teams. He stated that the daily relationship between players and their private coaches is essential for success in a team environment.
“I want to get in touch with the players as soon as possible and also talk to their coaches,” Björkman said in a press release. “It is they who work with the players every day and know them best. A close dialogue with the coaches is therefore important for me to be able to support and coach the players in the best way in the Davis Cup.”
To assist in this effort, the Swedish Tennis Association has appointed former professional player Thomas Johansson as an assistant coach, with his engagement confirmed for the 2027 season.
