Southampton are the third-highest scorers in the 2026/27 Championship after 11 games.
It’s a decent start, especially considering the Saints have the second-fewest goals conceded in the campaign of any team thus far.
Had they won a tight encounter against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon, Tonda Eckert’s side would have shot to the top of the non-points deduction league table. It’s whataboutery, but it’s factual - they have been good this season, despite not always clicking into gear.
One squad issue does remain that was left unsolved in the summer transfer window, however. The Saints don’t really have any goalscoring wingers.
Leo Scienza is a decent source of creativity, with two goals and two assists in the Championship so far this season. Kuryu Matsuki is another competent option, with two goals and one assist.
Off the bench, however, Tom Fellows and Sam Edozie have just one goal between them in the last 12 months. It’s not consistent enough for a promotion-hunting team.
One player Southampton let leave on loan, along with goalscoring option Cameron Archer, was 19-year-old prospect Jay Robinson, who is perhaps the most exciting young player the club has in its ranks.
Out on loan in Monza, Italy, Robinson already has two goals in Serie A, making him the joint-highest-scoring English teenager in Europe’s top five leagues, alongside Fulham’s Josh King.
Everybody at Southampton will be delighted to see Jay Robinson playing so well abroad. Under former manager Ivan Juric, the technical playmaker is really finding his feet.
In five Serie A games, the 19-year-old has scored twice and struck the post twice. It’s a scintillating start.
While head coach Tonda Eckert will be delighted to see his progress, perhaps the German may feel Robinson could be putting his goalscoring efforts to use in the Championship for the Saints.
The youngster needs game time - but would surely see that over somebody like Sam Edozie, who posted an Instagram statement on deadline day announcing he had asked to leave the club, and was frustrated that he had not been able to pursue doing so.
Edozie’s post has since been removed from his account, but that has not changed the fact the 23-year-old is a futile creative option at the best of times.
Southampton may just be regretting letting Jay Robinson depart this summer, though the English winger doing so well abroad will only fill the club with excitement at what is in store when he makes his return.
