Debibi United pitch is fit for cassava farming, not football – Koukouras fumes after Gold Stars defeat

Bibiani Gold Stars head coach Petros Koukouras has launched a scathing criticism of the playing surface at Debibi Presby Park, claiming the pitch is more suitable for cassava farming than hosting competitive football matches.

The Greek tactician made the remarks after his side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Debibi United in their Matchday 7 fixture of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.

Maxwell Agyemang scored shortly before half-time to hand the hosts all three points, ending their three-match winless run and providing a significant boost to their campaign.

However, the result was overshadowed by Koukouras’ strong reaction to the condition of the playing surface, which he believes made it difficult for his team to play their preferred style of football.

Speaking after the match, the Gold Stars coach expressed frustration over the state of the pitch and questioned whether it was suitable for a top-flight football encounter.

“We cannot discuss football. I don’t think this is a pitch designated for football. Maybe it is designated for cassava plantation. I don’t have anything else to say,” he said.

His comments underline the concerns surrounding the quality of playing surfaces in the domestic league, with pitch conditions often becoming a subject of debate among coaches and players.

For Koukouras, the state of the ground at Debibi Presby Park was a major concern following a defeat that left his side with work to do as they seek to regain momentum in the competition.

Debibi United, meanwhile, will take considerable encouragement from the victory. Agyemang’s first-half strike proved decisive, helping the newly competing top-flight side end their winless spell and move level on seven points with Gold Stars.

The result also lifted Debibi United out of the relegation zone, offering the team renewed hope as they continue their efforts to establish themselves in the Ghana Premier League.

Gold Stars must now turn their attention to their next assignment as they prepare to host Heart of Lions in a Matchday 8 encounter this weekend.

Koukouras will be hoping his players respond positively to the setback and return to winning ways in front of their home supporters.

Debibi United, on the other hand, will seek to build on their important victory when they travel to face Bechem United, with another positive result potentially strengthening their position in the league standings.
