Europe’s elite soccer leagues are seeing an unfamiliar set of names climb the scoring charts, alongside familiar dominance in England.
In England, the scoring hierarchy remains anchored by familiar force Erling Haaland. The striker leads the Premier League outright with eight goals, maintaining an advantage over challengers Alexander Isak of Liverpool and Joao Pedro of Chelsea, who sit behind him with five goals apiece. Haaland’s recent performance included a decisive brace in a 3-2 victory against Ipswich Town, a fixture that added another milestone to his record in English football.
That multi-goal outing pushed Haaland past the 100-goal threshold in the Premier League specifically excluding penalties, a mark he reached in just 139 matches. Factoring in his conversions from the penalty spot, the forward’s total tally in the English top flight stands at 120 goals.
Italy’s Serie A has opened the season with an unexpected title race for the Capocannoniere. While Donyell Malen initially set a fast pace with six goals, he has been reeled in by unexpected contenders from newly promoted clubs, notably Gustavo Varela at Monza and Antonio Raimondo at Frosinone, who have netted six and seven goals respectively.
Raimondo, a 2004-born forward on loan from Bologna and an Italy under-21 international, surged ahead of the pack last weekend by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Sassuolo. Reflecting on his movement on the pitch, Raimondo told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he prefers running behind the defensive line rather than dropping deep to collect possession.
Germany’s Bundesliga features two veteran forwards sharing the summit of the goalscoring charts. Werder Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug and Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick are tied at the top with six goals each, closely pursued by Michael Olise of Bayern Munich, Philip Tietz of Mainz, and Younes Ebnoutalib of Eintracht Frankfurt, all on five tallies.
Füllkrug’s return to Werder Bremen on loan highlights the veteran group’s resurgence. The 33-year-old previously claimed the division’s scoring prize during the 2022-23 campaign with 16 goals. Discussing his career choices following stints with West Ham and Milan, Füllkrug noted during his presentation that his motivation is driven by passion rather than financial compensation.
France’s Ligue 1 continues to showcase emerging and unheralded talent at the top of its scoring charts. Rennes forward Esteban Lepaul leads the division with seven goals, flanked by Lassine Sinayoko of Paris FC, Casper Tengstedt of Toulouse, and Amine Gouiri of Marseille.
Lepaul’s position at the top is familiar territory. The forward finished as Le Championnat’s leading scorer last season with 21 goals, though he was omitted from the UNFP Player of the Year awards. His path includes a recent hat-trick scored via penalties during a 4-3 defeat against Paris FC, capping a journey through France’s lower divisions that followed a difficult period marked by family tragedy.
