Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing an important decision over his long-term future at Real Madrid, with Chelsea prepared to explore a possible move if the England international becomes available in 2027.
Alexander-Arnold’s first season in the Spanish capital has been disrupted by injury, and new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has moved the 28-year-old down the right-back pecking order. He is currently behind Denzel Dumfries and club captain Fede Valverde in the competition for a starting place.
That change in status has left Alexander-Arnold unhappy, and he could consider returning to the Premier League. However, a move back to Liverpool is not being considered.
Chelsea are understood to be ready to offer Alexander-Arnold an alternative route out of Madrid, according to Football Insider. The London club could investigate the possibility of signing him on loan in January, although any permanent transfer would be delayed until next summer.
Neither Alexander-Arnold nor Chelsea are currently planning a move in the January transfer window. Mourinho may nevertheless be open to a temporary deal if Chelsea make an approach.
The potential move would also reunite Alexander-Arnold with Xabi Alonso, who is keen to work with the defender again following their six months together in Madrid.
Chelsea’s interest is therefore dependent on Alexander-Arnold’s situation developing further at Real Madrid. A loan could provide a short-term solution in January, while a permanent agreement would be held back until the following summer.
