Two of football's greatest individual seasons belong to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, yet the numbers behind each campaign reveal starkly contrasting paths to glory.
Ronaldo's 2007/08 season at Manchester United produced 42 goals across 49 appearances, with 31 coming in the Premier League and eight in the UEFA Champions League.
That tally earned him both the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe, while United claimed the Premier League title and the Champions League, with Ronaldo scoring in the final against Chelsea before his side prevailed on penalties.
At the end of that calendar year, the then 23-year-old Portuguese collected his first Ballon d'Or, with Messi finishing as runner-up.
The combination of elite goal output and major silverware defined Ronaldo's award-winning season.
Winning the Premier League and Champions League in the same year placed him among the game's elite, and his individual honours only reinforced the case. Messi, at that point, was still emerging as the dominant force he would later become.
Four years later, Messi produced what many regard as the most prolific individual campaign in football history.
His 73 goals in 60 official matches for Barcelona included 50 in La Liga and 14 in the Champions League, the latter setting a new record for goals in a single European club season. His overall tally also broke the record for goals in one club season.
Despite those historic figures, Barcelona's collective year was relatively modest. The club won the Copa del Rey but fell short in both La Liga and the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Messi's numbers were so far beyond anything previously recorded that he secured his fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or in 2012.
Placed side by side, the contrast is clear. Ronaldo scored 42 goals to Messi's 73; Messi made 60 appearances to Ronaldo's 49.
In the Champions League, Messi's 14 goals outpaced Ronaldo's eight, while Messi's 50 league goals dwarfed Ronaldo's 31.
Where Ronaldo holds the advantage is in team honours: the Premier League and Champions League against Messi's Copa del Rey.
The comparison reflects the broader debate that has defined their rivalry. Ronaldo's 2007/08 season demonstrated how individual brilliance can align with collective success, while Messi's 2011/12 campaign stood alone as a feat of pure goalscoring that has yet to be matched.
