Ruben Amorim rips into his AC Milan players after embarrassing Europa League defeat: Ex-Man United boss hits out at team's attitude and criticises 'awful' performance

Ruben Amorim savaged his AC Milan side for their 'awful' attitude and performance in losing to Hungarian minnows Ferencvaros.

The former Man United boss presided over a 2-0 defeat in the Europa League on Thursday night in front of furious home supporters at the San Siro.

To make matters worse, the visitors even played the last 15 minutes with ten men but Milan were still unable to break through.

Amorim, 41, who was sacked from his post at Old Trafford last season and took over the Italian club in the summer, gave a brutal assessment of his team after the loss.

'When you play for Milan, you have a responsibility; you can't go out there like this,' he said at his post-match press conference.

'We're not ready to compete on both fronts in Serie A and Europe; we need to work on our approach to matches.

'There's nothing I can say tonight; we had to win; it was an important match. I can't say anything to defend the team; we need to understand what happened.'

He went on: 'Maybe I did something wrong in the last few days. Last year, the team had similar problems, and today we weren't ready; we didn't have the attitude to try to come back at all costs when we were behind.

'Tonight, we have no excuses. Whoever was on the pitch could have won this match. We have to resolve these ups and downs; we should have done many things much better, even just on second balls: that alone would have made things go differently.

'The first half, in particular, was awful; it's about ambition, attitude, and concentration. We weren't ready to move from the derby to another competition.'

Amorim's side are fifth in Serie A, seven points off top spot, and struggling massively in Europe down in 28th place – outside of the qualification spots for the knockout stages.

Even though Amorim made changes to the side that beat Inter in the derby at the weekend, he insisted the team should have had enough to beat Ferencvaros.

He went on: 'We're not mentally ready. The technical aspect has nothing to do with it. The rotation has nothing to do with it. You can't tell me that the starting line-up wasn't up to the task of winning the game.

'We gave ourselves all the chances we had, especially at the start. I take full responsibility for this, because the team is my responsibility, but we can't afford to do something like this, especially in the first half, in front of our fans, at our home. We can't do this; we have to improve, otherwise it's over.

'We want to do well in the Europa League too, we need to rotate and win like that too. We're not ready to play every three days now, but I certainly won't give up on the Europa League. We'll fight until it's over. It's a promise.'

Amorim's results at AC Milan have been mixed after a positive start at his new club. He opted to take charge of the Italian giants having been out of work since his dismissal at United.

The Portuguese's reign at Old Trafford was disastrous. He oversaw the club's lowest Premier League finish (15th) after joining in November 2024.

And he only managed to win 38 per cent of United's games, taking 58 points from 47 games in the Premier League in total.

Amorim will hope the Ferencvaros result is a blip and AC Milan will have the chance to bounce back against Genoa on Sunday.
