Swiss Indoors 2026: Record Attendance and Costs Despite Early Star Exits

Tournament organizers recorded 67,600 spectators across nine days at the St. Jakobshalle, marking the highest attendance in the post-Federer era for the ATP 500 event in Basel, according to tournament director Roger Brennwald.

Record Attendance Meets Soaring Operational Costs

The 55th edition of the Swiss Indoors brought strong ticket demand alongside record financial commitments. Roger Brennwald reported during the closing press conference that the 2026 event operated on a budget of nearly 19 million Swiss francs, making it the most expensive and elaborate tournament in the history of the event. For the first time, twelve players were contracted in advance.

Despite venue capacity being reduced from 8,600 to 8,100 seats due to safety regulations, ticket sales remained robust. Brennwald noted that the event was practically sold out even before Novak Djokovic confirmed his late participation, with the remaining 1,000 to 2,000 tickets snapped up quickly during tournament week. The total attendance figure included 2,500 free tickets distributed to youths.

Early Star Exits Shape a Surprising Final

The tournament field experienced a wave of early exits among top players. Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton both exited before the weekend matches, leaving the draw without its marquee names in the closing rounds. Shelton was eliminated in a late-night match on Thursday by Jérôme Kym, ranked No. 222 in the world. Taylor Fritz was the last top star standing before he exited in the Saturday semifinals, defeated by Valentin Vacherot. Brennwald jokingly remarked that he might write a clause into future player contracts requiring them to reach at least the semifinals, and quipped that it remained very questionable whether Kym would receive a wildcard next year after knocking out Shelton.

Reflecting on the final showdown between Jiri Lehecka and Valentin Vacherot, Brennwald acknowledged it was not the dream matchup he envisioned. He had hoped for a final featuring Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton, describing an ideal pairing of that caliber as worthy of a Grand Slam final. By contrast, the rival tournament in Vienna featured a star-studded semifinal lineup ranging from Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medwedew and Alexander Zverev to Alex De Minaur, with Alcaraz ultimately winning the title.

Financial Realities Competing With European Rivals

Operating in Switzerland presents distinct financial hurdles compared to rival indoor events in Europe. While the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna runs on an estimated budget of roughly 13 million francs, Basel’s expenses reached nearly 19 million francs. Brennwald noted that Basel cannot offer two sessions per day to generate extra revenue and must contend with world metropolises, adding that the organization needs to calm down and save resources rather than keep expanding, though he intends to continue for a few more years with a crew of about 500 internal and 500 external staff.

Brennwald addressed the funding provided by the Canton of Basel-Stadt, which contributes half a million francs annually plus value-added tax in exchange for the “Basel” inscription on the Centre Court. He noted that the inscription is worth 20 million and urged observers not to speak of simple sponsoring.

Stan Wawrinka Bids Farewell in Basel

The 2026 edition also featured the tournament farewell of Stan Wawrinka. Organizing the tribute for Wawrinka required significant logistical effort alongside the regular tournament operations. Brennwald admitted that coordinating the farewell ceremony exhausted his remaining reserves of energy but emphasized his pride in Wawrinka’s decision to choose Basel.
