Chelsea star was suspended for lack of respect as fans made captaincy demand

The Blues ace found himself in the fans' bad books

The Saturday lunchtime meeting between Chelsea and Manchester United could see Emmanuel Emegha finally make his Premier League bow for the Blues. The Dutch striker joined from Strasbourg over the summer but injury delayed his debut. He finally made it onto the pitch on Wednesday when Xabi Alonso’s side took on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, replacing Danny Welbeck with a little over 20 minutes remaining. However, the night ended in disappointment, with Emegha squandering the chance to send Chelsea through on penalties before a Wesley Fofana miss sent Liverpool through.

Emegha will be champing at the bit to get off the mark for his new club after a difficult end to his time in France. He top-scored for Strasbourg in the 2024/25 season, prompting Chelsea to part with a reported £21million to bring him to Stamford Bridge, only for injury to restrict him to just 18 games in all competitions last term. That wasn’t the only problem, though, with Strasbourg fans hitting out at the player’s move from one BlueCo club to another - just a few months before manager Liam Rosenior made the same switch.

In September 2025, Emegha was subject to boos from fans of his own club. Strasbourg supporters also unveiled a banner making their feelings very clear.

"Emegha, pawn of BlueCo. After changing shirt, give back your captain's armband," it read. The skipper wasn’t on the pitch for the game in question against Le Havre but he - or the club - ignored those pleas and ensured he kept the armband for future matches.

Things got worse in December, with the French club suspending him for one match after contentious public comments. At the time, it was reported that he was punished in part for an interview in which he said he thought Strasbourg was in Germany before joining the club.

“Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace has decided to suspend Emmanuel Emegha for its next Ligue 1 match, this Saturday December 6 in Toulouse,” a club statement at the time read.

“This decision was taken following the player's recent failure to respect the club's values, expectations and rules. Racing reaffirms its commitment to the essential principles of exemplary conduct and respect for the collective framework.

“Emmanuel remains an important member of our team, who has always given his all for the club on the pitch. He will be reintegrated into the squad after this match. No further comments will be made.”

Emegha accepted the club’s decision to suspend him. "I'm 22 years old, I've made mistakes, and I know I still have a lot to learn. And I have to learn from this,” he said.

“I know I need to do better, and I will do better, on the pitch and off it; to represent the club. That's important to me."

"I want to make it clear that I never intended to hurt anyone. Since I arrived here at 19, I have always given everything for Strasbourg. I'm proud to play for Racing and I'm proud to wear the captain's armband."

The Dutchman missed most of the next few months through injury and only scored one more goal for Strasbourg. It came in a famous win, though, helping his side book their place in the semi-finals of the Conference League.

“Looking back to three years ago, when I chose to sign for Strasbourg, it was the best choice of my career so far, and I'm proud of it,” he wrote on Instagram in June as he said goodbye to the Ligue 1 outfit. “Had an amazing time with my teammates, physicians and technical staff. I've got injuries, I've come back stronger, I've scored goals and missed chances, but it's all part of football and learning.

“I'll miss the city a lot, Strasbourg has become my home. Gave my all every game. I played with heart and passion for Strasbourg. To all the supporters, the angry supporters, the happy supporters, the kids, the grandparents - I love you all despite everything that has happened.”

With Joao Pedro out injured, Emegha’s return from his latest setback comes at a perfect time for both him and Chelsea. “For sure it’s important that we have him available because he has special qualities,” Blues boss Xabi Alonso said before handing the player his debut in midweek.

His final year in Strasbourg might not have gone to plan for a number of reasons. Now, though, he has the chance to kick-start the next chapter.
