Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool damaged their Premier League title ambitions after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds were beaten by Kai Havertz’s decisive goal, which followed a costly loss of possession after goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s clearance.
Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League standings, raising questions about their ability to challenge for the championship.
Speaking on Monday’s episode of The Overlap, Gerrard criticised his former side’s defending while acknowledging Arsenal’s determination, reports Liverpool.
“They [Liverpool] shot themselves in the foot, because there was no need to concede that early goal,” Gerrard said.
The former Liverpool captain also highlighted missed opportunities, including an Alexis Mac Allister chance and a controversial penalty incident.
“But they had the [Alexis] Mac Allister chance to get level, and obviously the penalty incident is big. Alisson makes a save.
“I thought, on the balance of the whole game, 1-0 would have been a fair result, but credit to Arsenal.”
Gerrard praised Arsenal’s resilience, believing their ability to secure victories in difficult away fixtures could prove decisive during the title race.
“That’s how you win leagues, going to places like Liverpool, being strong, sticking together, and putting in a different type of performance, which was full of grit and fight and togetherness, and they got over the line.”
He also maintained his prediction that Mikel Arteta’s side would eventually lift the Premier League trophy.
“And they will know that come the end of the season, if they win the league, which I think they will, I haven’t changed my mind from the beginning of the season.”
Liverpool must now respond quickly when they face Fenerbahce in the Champions League before hosting Crystal Palace in their final fixture ahead of the November international break.
