FC Bayern assistant Aaron Danks says the upcoming international break will offer a chance to reassess Vincent Kompany's situation and evaluate his potential return.
Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks provided the latest update on Vincent Kompany's recovery during a press conference on Friday.
Kompany has been absent since collapsing on the training pitch on October 23, two days before Bayern Munich's 3-1 Bundesliga win over SC Freiburg.
The 40-year-old was subsequently diagnosed with meningeal irritation and is continuing his recovery at home after being discharged from hospital.
“I’ve had a few really good phone calls with Vince. He seems very positive and appears to be well on the way to a full recovery. The international break provides a good opportunity to reflect and see when he can return," Danks told reporters.
The 43-year-old coach also opened up about the past few weeks, during which he has taken on increased responsibility and led Bayern from the touchline in four games.
“I'm someone who always wants to learn and improve. The circumstances weren't how I would've liked, with Vince not here. We didn't want that. I accepted the situation and have learned a lot, have developed my leadership skills in this time. I'm looking forward to the rest of the international break, maybe being able to go home and spend time with my family. But we've got an important game first that we're focusing on,” Danks said and went on to reflect on his working relationship with Kompany.
“It's a difficult balance. We've been working closely together for two and a half years. I understand the values and principles. It's helped that we've worked together for so long. I want to protect what we've done and developed. Everyone has stepped up - the players, the backroom staff. We've come through this time. We've tried to show everything he's developed within us.”
Danks also credited the players for their response to the challenging circumstances without Kompany.
“I’ve learnt most from the players – from their mentality, how they stick together as a group, how they support one another – even the injured ones. Their fighting spirit has inspired me and taught me a great deal about what it takes to perform at the highest level. I try to find the right words, but they are the ones who deliver on the pitch. I have enormous respect for that,” he added.
Danks will take charge of Bayern for at least one more game when they travel to Mainz on Saturday.
