Barcelona star Raphinha’s alleged social media activity has caught the eye after Harry Kane was named the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.
On Monday night, in front of a home crowd inside the London Palladium, Kane was announced as the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or award, beating Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.
The Englishman enjoyed a stellar 2025/2026 campaign, scoring 73 goals for club and country, with 61 of those scored in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich.
Kane is the third player in the 21st century to score 61 or more goals in Europe’s top five divisions, joining the legendary duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
While many felt Kane was a deserving winner of the Ballon d’Or, it appears that Barcelona star Raphinha may not agree.
It has been reported by Spanish news outlet SPORT that Raphinha ‘liked’ a social media post questioning Kane’s victory.
The video in question was posted by content creator Dani Quintana, and it questioned France Football’s Ballon d’Or criteria, stating that Raphinha had a similar season to Kane’s a year ago, but only finished fifth in the rankings.
Quintana said: “They gave Harry Kane the Ballon d'Or for the same reasons that kept Raphinha in fifth place last year. Raphinha won the domestic treble, and the level of competition in Spain is higher than in Germany.
“Raphinha was eliminated from the Champions League in the semi-finals, just like Kane, but he finished the competition as both the top scorer and the top assist provider.
“Kane is a fantastic player, but the question is: Why wasn't the same standard applied to Raphinha? If goals are all that matter, then they should just say so instead of changing their criteria depending on the player.”
Raphinha won the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona and was close to reaching 60 goal contributions.
However, the Ballon d’Or eventually went to Ousmane Dembele, who helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League.
By winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or, Kane followed in the footsteps of players such as Michael Owen, Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan as English players to have lifted football's most prestigious individual award.
Speaking immediately after winning the prize, Kane said: “Wow. Wow, wow, wow. First of all... I'm almost speechless. Luckily I have this list here!
“Thank you again to France Football for the Ballon d'Or, for putting on this amazing event. Being here in London as well has made it extra special. It looked like a good omen today, so thank you very much.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was very tough this year, some of the incredible players I was up against. Some of my teammates and some of the world-class players that are in the room tonight.”
The England skipper went on to thank his Bayern teammates as well as his Three Lions teammates, while all of his current and former coaches and his family got a mention also.
