Following Beyer Leverkusen’s reported interest in Mofokeng in recent weeks, the German publication Fussbal News has revealed that fellow Bundesliga club SC Freiburg have joined the fray.
The outlet further revealed that Dutch club AZ Alkmaar are in the mix.
“German Bundesliga sides Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg are reportedly monitoring the 22-year-old South African international, who currently plays for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise,” the report said.
Mofokeng has enjoyed a remarkable rise since leaving Orlando Pirates, quickly establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting exports in European football.
The 22-year-old winger completed a €3.5 million move to Belgian Pro League champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2026 after an outstanding final season with the Buccaneers, where he won the 2026 PSL Footballer of the Year award.
The move to Belgium has proved to be an important step in his career, with Mofokeng wasting little time making his mark in European football.
He converted the decisive penalty on his debut against Club Brugge to help Union SG win the Belgian Super Cup. He has since continued to impress under coach David Hubert, showing his versatility in attacking positions.
Mofokeng has registered five goals and four assists in his first 15 appearances for the Belgian outfit.
His impressive start has also extended to European competition, where he scored on his UEFA Europa League debut against Viktoria Plzeň.
The South African international’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with his attacking contributions and consistency earning him a nomination for the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month award for October.
Mofokeng has also carried his impressive club form into international football, playing a leading role in South Africa’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
One of his standout performances came in an important away qualifier against Eritrea, where he scored twice to help Bafana Bafana secure a crucial victory.
The brace further underlined his growing importance to the national team, with the 22-year-old becoming an influential figure in South Africa’s attack.
His performances for both club and country have strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s most exciting attacking talents.
