Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has backed Mike Penders to perform well as the Blues prepare for their Premier League showdown with Tottenham Hotspur, with the young goalkeeper potentially in line for a starting position following an injury to Emiliano Martínez.
According to football.london on Friday, October 23, 2026, Alonso is confident that Penders has the necessary qualities to succeed at senior level after impressing during training and in cup matches.
The Chelsea boss believes the youngster has demonstrated both his technical ability and the right mentality to handle the responsibility of playing for the first team.
Alonso praised Penders when discussing his readiness for the challenge, stating: “He's ready. He's training well. He showed he has a good level in the cup games. In the few minutes against Everton, he showed his quality and personality. We are fully convinced Mike can play very well.”
The Spanish manager’s statement suggests that he has no major concerns about trusting Penders in a high-pressure Premier League fixture. With Martínez unavailable because of injury, the goalkeeper could be given his first league start when Chelsea face Tottenham.
Alonso also shed light on why Chelsea decided to sign Martínez, stressing that the club wanted to ensure it had the best possible goalkeeping options while continuing to invest in Penders’ development.
Explaining the decision, he added: “We wanted to have the best possible options and we decided to move with Emi. Mike is a keeper for now and the future. Working with Emi, he's having a great impact on the team and Mike.”
His comments highlight Chelsea’s confidence in Penders and their belief that he can contribute to the team both now and in the years ahead. The opportunity to learn from an experienced goalkeeper such as Martínez is also expected to benefit the youngster as he works towards establishing himself at Stamford Bridge.
Nevertheless, Martínez’s injury could have an immediate impact on Chelsea’s selection decisions, potentially opening the door for Penders to feature from the beginning against Tottenham.
The London derby could therefore become an important moment in the young goalkeeper’s career, giving him the chance to show that he is capable of delivering when the stakes are high. His performances in cup competitions have already provided encouraging signs and convinced Alonso that he can be relied upon when needed.
Chelsea are preparing for a crucial Premier League encounter and will want to approach the match with confidence. Ensuring that the team has a reliable presence between the posts will be particularly important as they look to maintain their defensive organisation against Tottenham.
While Alonso has not officially announced his starting goalkeeper, his public backing of Penders and Martínez’s injury have increased the likelihood of the youngster being handed the responsibility.
If selected, Penders will have an opportunity to justify his manager’s confidence, make a strong impression in the Premier League and strengthen his chances of securing a more prominent role in Chelsea’s first team.
