According to reports by Evening Standard on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry is set to make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge after leaving the club on loan to join Portuguese side Sporting for the 2026-27 season.
The 19-year-old winger will be back at his former club's home ground when Sporting face Shakhtar Donetsk in a Champions League encounter on Tuesday evening. Although Derry is currently representing the Portuguese giants, the fixture offers him an opportunity to return to the stadium where he began his senior career.
Derry joined Sporting on loan to gain valuable first-team experience after making his breakthrough at Chelsea. His return to Stamford Bridge is particularly interesting because he has not played at the ground since his Premier League debut in May.
That appearance ended in a worrying moment when he suffered a serious head collision with Nottingham Forest defender Zach Abbott and was taken to hospital during the match. Fortunately, Derry has since recovered and is continuing his development in Portugal.
However, his first months at Sporting have not been entirely straightforward. The young attacker has had to be patient while waiting for opportunities to establish himself in the team, with his first six appearances coming from the substitutes' bench.
His involvement in the Portuguese league has also been limited. According to the Evening Standard, he has played only 32 minutes across four league substitute appearances, excluding stoppage time.
Nevertheless, there are signs that his situation could be improving after receiving a more significant opportunity last week.
Sporting handed Derry his first starting appearance for the club in their Portuguese League Cup meeting with Maritimo. He made the opportunity count by providing an assist for the opening goal as his team secured a 2-1 victory.
The youngster played 73 minutes in that encounter, giving him a valuable opportunity to demonstrate what he could offer after spending much of his early loan spell watching from the sidelines.
His performance could now put him in contention for another opportunity against Shakhtar Donetsk, with Sporting interim head coach Tiago Fernandes having the option of handing him his first Champions League start.
The match also carries an unusual setting because Shakhtar are using Stamford Bridge as their home ground for European competition this season due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine's Donbas region.
