Peter Obi Congratulates Flamingos After Historic World Cup Victory

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated the Flamingos following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

In a report published by Punch on November 8, 2026, Obi's congratulatory message was highlighted after Nigeria defeated Japan 2-1 in Saturday's final in Rabat. The former governor praised the young players for their determination, talent and commitment, saying they had brought happiness and pride to the country.

Obi also shared his reaction on X shortly after the final, thanking the players for raising Nigeria's flag on the international stage. He said their performance had earned them a special place in the hearts of Nigerians.

“Thank you for raising our flag high and bringing immense joy to our nation. Your remarkable talent, resilience, hard work and dedication have earned you a special place in the hearts of Nigerians,” he wrote.

He further described the achievement as evidence of what Nigerian youths can accomplish when given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Obi congratulated the team and expressed confidence in the country's future.

The victory made Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. According to FIFA's match report published on November 7, 2026, the Flamingos secured the title through goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku.

Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute after her effort slipped past Japan's goalkeeper. Umejiaku extended Nigeria's advantage two minutes after the restart, scoring in the 47th minute. Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute but could not find an equaliser.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in its November 7 report, also described the result as a historic achievement for the continent, noting that Nigeria had secured its first title in the competition.

The Flamingos' campaign was particularly remarkable because they recovered from a 2-1 opening defeat to Poland before winning their remaining six matches. Their victories included group-stage matches against Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea, followed by knockout wins over Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil before defeating Japan in the final.

The National Sports Commission also congratulated the team, describing the victory as a defining moment for Nigerian and African women's football. Its statement, published by the Federal Ministry of Information on November 7, noted that the Flamingos had become the first team in the competition's history to lose their opening match and still go on to win the trophy.

Nigeria's achievement has attracted congratulations from political leaders, sports officials and football supporters, as the young players celebrate a landmark victory for the country.
