According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been advised to rethink his attacking selection ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, with Shea Lacey being considered as a possible replacement for Amad Diallo.
The recommendation follows the teenager's impressive contribution to Manchester United's 3-2 Champions League comeback victory against Roma. Lacey was introduced in the second half and immediately showed his ability to influence the game through his movement, creativity and confidence on the ball.
United had to fight back to secure all three points, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the penalty spot before Matheus Cunha struck twice to complete the turnaround. Lacey also played a crucial part in the winning goal after providing Cunha with a perfectly delivered pass.
His display attracted attention because of the maturity and quality he demonstrated despite his age. The 19-year-old completed all his attempted passes and won most of his individual duels, showing that he can compete effectively against experienced opponents.
Carrick has also acknowledged the youngster's ability to bring unpredictability to United's attacking play. His creativity and willingness to take on defenders could become valuable qualities as the team prepares for its next Premier League assignment.
Meanwhile, Amad Diallo is facing increasing scrutiny over his performances in the final third. The Ivorian winger has often displayed excellent technical ability, but his recent lack of goals and assists has raised questions about his attacking influence.
His last goal for Manchester United came on December 15 during the entertaining 4-4 draw against Bournemouth. Since that match, he has contributed only two assists.
Amad's overall statistics are another reason for concern, as he has recorded seven goal contributions in 40 appearances since the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign.
Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has similarly expressed reservations about the winger's finishing contribution. Rooney believes Amad must become more productive in the final third and has also backed the idea of introducing Lacey into the starting team.
With Aston Villa waiting on Sunday, Carrick must decide whether to maintain his existing attacking arrangement or give the young winger a chance from the beginning.
Promoting Lacey into the starting eleven could provide Manchester United with additional attacking creativity and a fresh approach as they look to secure a positive result.
