According to a report by GOAL on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mourinho made the remarks while addressing journalists ahead of Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League encounter against AEK Athens, scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.
The Portuguese manager acknowledged Valverde's importance to the squad but explained that captaining a club like Real Madrid involves responsibilities beyond performing well in one's preferred position. He believes the midfielder must be ready to make sacrifices whenever the team faces difficulties, particularly with several players unavailable through injuries.
With Real Madrid experiencing defensive shortages, Valverde could be required to operate as a left-back rather than in his usual midfield role. Mourinho insisted that the midfielder's responsibility as captain should encourage him to accept such tactical adjustments without hesitation.
"I see Fede as an extremely important player for the team," Mourinho said.
"The fact of being Real Madrid's captain makes him look around in a different way. When you are the captain, you have to be different. It is a responsibility and I think that will make him play wherever is necessary for his team and for his teammates."
Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea and Manchester United, also made it clear that he would have no difficulty deploying Valverde in defence if circumstances required such a decision.
However, he admitted that Real Madrid must also consider their midfield situation, as the team has limited alternatives in that department. He referenced Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Bernardo and Thiago as available options, while highlighting Valverde's importance because of his quality, energy and ability to contribute across different positions.
Meanwhile, Mourinho confirmed that Vinicius Junior would feature in the starting lineup against AEK Athens. He identified the Brazilian forward as the most suitable option for the left-wing position.
The manager also emphasised the importance of collecting maximum points in the Champions League, explaining that Real Madrid still need positive results to secure automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Nevertheless, his expectations of Valverde's leadership attracted considerable attention. The midfielder's versatility, determination and commitment have made him an influential figure at the Spanish club, and Mourinho expects him to demonstrate those qualities even more prominently while wearing the captain's armband.
