CAF restores biennial AFCON format, giving Super Eagles more chances to win title

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided against changing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year competition, confirming that the tournament will continue to hold every two years. The development could be encouraging for Nigeria's Super Eagles as they continue their pursuit of another continental championship.

The decision reverses CAF's earlier announcement in December 2025, when the organisation proposed extending the interval between AFCON tournaments to four years. Under the initial plan, an African Nations League was expected to provide additional international competition during the period between successive AFCON editions.

However, the proposal reportedly generated concerns over the financial resources and organisational demands needed to sustain the new competition. After considering the challenges, CAF began reviewing its plans.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe had earlier suggested that the governing body was reconsidering the proposed changes. The organisation eventually confirmed on Friday, October 30, 2026, that AFCON would maintain its traditional biennial format.

The decision means African national teams will continue competing for the continental trophy at two-year intervals. It also provides greater certainty for football associations as they prepare their long-term programmes and develop their squads.

How Nigeria Could Benefit From the New Arrangement

Nigeria's Super Eagles have a strong record in the history of AFCON, having won the competition on three occasions. Their most recent triumph came in 2013, when they defeated Burkina Faso in the final to become African champions.

Since that achievement, the country has been unable to secure another title despite producing competitive performances in subsequent editions.

The Super Eagles finished third at the 2019 tournament before reaching the final in 2023. However, their hopes of winning a fourth championship were ended by Ivory Coast, who secured a 2-1 victory in the final.

With CAF retaining the two-year schedule, Nigeria will have more opportunities to challenge for the trophy and improve on its previous performances.

The development could also be useful to head coach Eric Chelle, who is working towards establishing a balanced squad capable of competing successfully against other African nations.

More frequent tournaments would give the Franco-Malian coach additional opportunities to assess his players, experiment with different tactical systems and introduce emerging footballers to the demands of international competition.

Young prospects such as George Ilenikhena and Benjamin Fredrick could also benefit from the arrangement as they seek to earn regular invitations to the senior national team.

Despite the positive development, Nigeria's immediate objective remains qualification for the 2027 AFCON, which will be hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The Super Eagles have reportedly suffered a setback following a 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau, leaving Nigeria three points behind its opponents in the qualification race.

This means the national team must secure important results in its remaining matches to avoid missing the next continental championship.

Ultimately, retaining the biennial AFCON format gives Nigeria a better opportunity to pursue another African title. However, the Super Eagles must first resolve their qualification problems and build a consistent team capable of turning future opportunities into championship success.
