According to a report by The Athletic on Thursday, 5 November 2026, Valentin Barco believes Nico Paz could inherit Argentina’s number 10 shirt after Lionel Messi retires from international football.
The Chelsea midfielder praised the Como playmaker, saying he hopes the 22-year-old will become the next player entrusted with the jersey. Paz has attracted attention through his performances under former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
The Argentine has become a figure for Como, prompting interest from European clubs, including Chelsea. The Premier League side have reportedly sent scouts to assess him during Como’s Champions League defeat to Feyenoord and Serie A win against Fiorentina, where Paz scored and provided an assist.
He continued his run against Torino, recording another goal and assist. He then contributed to three goals in Como’s 9-1 victory over Lens, strengthening his reputation as one of the club’s key attacking players.
Chelsea are considering a move, although a January transfer is viewed as unlikely. Real Madrid reportedly hold a £70 million buyback clause in Paz’s agreement, while Chelsea could offer approximately £100 million to secure his signature.
Barco, who shared a room with Paz during the 2026 World Cup, was asked which young Argentine could contribute to the national team. He identified his former roommate, saying: “Nico, maybe. Nico is very, very good. He’s very well-rounded in every way. Personally, I really like his playing style.”
Asked whether Paz could take over Argentina’s number 10 shirt, Barco added: “I really hope so. I would love to see it. I shared a room with him at the World Cup; we spent more than 50 days together, and in a few training camps. We know each other’s journeys. I hope he can wear it.”
Barco is not alone in backing Paz for the responsibility. Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez has also supported the Como midfielder as a possible successor to Messi.
Paz’s creative numbers have added to the interest. Reports put him at 2.68 chances created per 90 minutes this season, ahead of Chelsea players Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. His performances and international backing continue to raise his profile.
