Chelsea have managed to accumulate more points than their underlying performances suggest they should have under Xabi Alonso, despite receiving criticism for their inconsistent displays this season.
According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, figures from Opta Analyst indicate that the Blues have an expected points total of 12.6, significantly below the 16 points they have secured so far.
The statistics suggest that Chelsea have exceeded expectations and currently occupy fourth position in the Premier League table.
Despite their league standing, Alonso has faced questions over his approach and team selections following several disappointing performances, with the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last month attracting particular attention.
Chelsea struggled to control that match, finishing with only 31 per cent possession despite having home advantage at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso's decision to play Morgan Rogers in the striker position also attracted criticism, while his timing of substitutions raised further concerns.
The defeat to Tottenham followed an earlier 3-0 loss against Brentford in September, as well as a frustrating 2-2 draw with newly promoted Hull City.
However, Chelsea's effectiveness in front of goal has helped them overcome some of their shortcomings. Palmer, Rogers and Pedro have been particularly influential in providing goals for the team.
FotMob statistics highlighted in the report show that Rogers and Pedro have both registered five Premier League goals, with Palmer contributing three.
Interestingly, Rogers has an expected goals figure of 2.8, compared with five actual goals. Pedro's expected goals stand at 3.0, while Palmer has an xG of 2.5.
These figures demonstrate how efficiently Chelsea's attacking players have converted their opportunities, scoring more frequently than their chances would ordinarily indicate.
Their clinical performances in front of goal have been a major factor in Chelsea securing points from games in which they have struggled to create enough scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, Pedro is set to miss Sunday's Premier League clash against Sunderland because he is still recovering from a thigh injury.
The Brazilian's absence will be disappointing for Alonso, but Chelsea can still rely on Palmer and Rogers to provide attacking inspiration as they look to secure another important result.
