Nigeria’s Flamingos have recorded an impressive achievement at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after becoming the first team in the competition’s history to have five different players receive the Player of the Match award across six games in a single tournament.
The milestone was completed following Nigeria’s 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The result secured the country’s first-ever place in the final of the youth competition.
According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the achievement reflects the quality and depth of the Nigerian squad, with several players making important contributions throughout the tournament.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was the first Flamingos player to earn the individual recognition after Nigeria defeated Puerto Rico 2-0. Kanyinsola Yusuf later received the honour following the team’s 3-1 win against defending champions North Korea.
Oluebube Umejiaku also made the list after her contribution to Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16. Favour Nkwocha subsequently became the fourth player to claim the award after the Flamingos secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against Venezuela in the quarter-finals.
Awawu Bashiru completed the historic achievement with her performance against Brazil. The forward delivered a decisive display by scoring twice in the second half, helping Nigeria overcome their opponents and book a place in the final.
The significance of the record lies in the number of players who have received individual recognition. Rather than depending on one standout performer, the Flamingos have demonstrated that several members of the team can influence important matches.
Following their impressive semi-final performance, Nigeria will now prepare for a final showdown against Japan on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
The encounter presents the Flamingos with an opportunity to secure their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title and bring their historic campaign to a memorable conclusion.
