According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Liverpool are considering making Ronald Araujo’s loan move permanent next summer after the Barcelona defender made a positive impression at Anfield under manager Andoni Iraola.
The Reds reportedly have the option to sign the Uruguay international for €55 million when the current campaign ends. His performances over the coming months could play a major role in determining whether the Premier League side activates the clause.
Araujo has settled into English football despite being deployed at right-back rather than his preferred centre-back position. His physical presence, aggressive defending and contributions going forward have strengthened his position within Liverpool’s squad.
Iraola has also played an important role in helping the 27-year-old adapt to his new surroundings. The manager has made use of Araujo’s experience and tactical flexibility, with the defender also making an impact in attack by scoring during Liverpool’s recent Champions League victory.
Speaking about the defender, Iraola praised his attitude and willingness to take on different responsibilities across the back line.
“Ronald needed this change and has arrived with humility. He is an experienced player from a big club who is ready to play in different positions,” the Liverpool manager explained.
Araujo’s ability to operate in multiple defensive roles could prove significant as Liverpool consider whether to invest €55 million in securing his services permanently. His versatility offers the club additional options when dealing with injuries, suspensions and tactical changes.
The defender has also indicated that he is enjoying his time on Merseyside. After finding regular first-team opportunities difficult to secure at Barcelona, he now has the chance to play consistently and demonstrate his abilities.
“I think I am finding what I needed here, which was to play, feel important and show my football,” Araujo said.
However, the Uruguayan has been cautious when discussing what lies ahead, stressing that his immediate priority is to continue playing regularly rather than make an early decision about his long-term future.
Barcelona will be keeping a close eye on his progress, with a permanent transfer potentially bringing in €55 million to help finance their own squad plans, including the possibility of recruiting another experienced defender.
For Liverpool, the final decision is likely to depend on Araujo’s consistency, overall contribution and suitability for the club’s long-term defensive strategy. His ability to cover both centre-back and right-back gives him added value, but he will need to maintain his current level throughout the season to strengthen the case for a permanent move.
