Former Watford striker Troy Deeney has compared Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen to former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, praising the Galatasaray star for his physical strength, movement and ability to trouble opposition defenders.
Deeney made the comparison while discussing Osimhen's performances ahead of Galatasaray's UEFA Champions League meeting with German club VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
The Nigerian international had scored nine goals in domestic competitions before the European fixture. His performances have continued to attract attention because of his ability to lead the attack, create space for teammates and put defenders under pressure.
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Deeney explained that Osimhen's contribution should not be measured by goals alone. He particularly praised the striker's work rate and ability to occupy several defenders while playing as the main forward.
According to Deeney, Osimhen reminds him of Drogba because both strikers have the ability to keep opposition defenders occupied throughout a match.
He also highlighted Osimhen's willingness to make runs behind defensive lines, move into wide attacking areas and participate in link-up play.
Deeney said: "People will look at the goals. I look at his work rate. The ability to work that whole backline on his own."
He added that Osimhen plays a similar role to Drogba by occupying defenders while also creating attacking opportunities through his movement and willingness to run into space.
The comparison is significant because Drogba established himself as one of Chelsea's most influential strikers during his playing career. The former Ivory Coast international was known for his physical presence, aerial ability and performances in important matches.
Osimhen has developed a reputation for similar attacking qualities, although the two players have different playing styles and career histories.
Galatasaray eventually defeated Stuttgart 2-0 at Rams Park, with Aleksey Batrakov scoring both goals in the first half. Osimhen did not score during the encounter but remained part of the attacking side that secured the victory.
The comments from Deeney have added to the discussion surrounding Osimhen's development and his growing reputation in European football.
