According to a report by The Guardian on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Chelsea suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, with their performance undermined by attacking struggles, defensive errors and the dismissal of Cole Palmer.
Although Tottenham delivered a strong performance to secure the victory, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is likely to face criticism over his starting lineup, tactical decisions and substitutions. Several of his choices have raised questions about whether Chelsea could have approached the London derby differently.
One decision that attracted attention was Alonso's choice to start Geovany Quenda instead of the injured João Pedro. The young winger was given his first Premier League start but struggled to provide the attacking influence Chelsea desperately needed. João Pedro had previously contributed important goals and assists, making his absence a significant setback for the home side.
Alonso's decision to trust Quenda was understandable, considering the circumstances, but starting a more experienced forward, such as Danny Welbeck, might have offered Chelsea additional experience and a different attacking approach. Quenda was eventually replaced after 72 minutes, but Chelsea remained unable to find a goal.
Another issue concerned Levi Colwill's continued involvement as Chelsea struggled to contain Tottenham's attacking movements. The home side appeared vulnerable defensively, particularly as pressure increased during the second half. Alonso could have considered introducing Wesley Fofana to provide fresh energy and potentially improve defensive stability. However, Fofana remained among the substitutes throughout the encounter. While this decision may attract criticism, the available reports do not establish that Colwill was solely responsible for Chelsea's defensive shortcomings.
Alonso's substitutions also came under scrutiny as Chelsea struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities. Despite Quenda making way for Estevão, the Blues failed to turn their possession into goals. An earlier tactical adjustment might have helped them regain control, although Palmer's red card in the 81st minute significantly complicated their efforts.
The decisive moments ultimately shaped the result. In the 77th minute, goalkeeper Mike Penders mishandled a Tottenham corner, diverting the ball into his own net. Palmer's dismissal further weakened Chelsea before Mathys Tel scored in the 87th minute following an impressive individual run and finish.
The defeat leaves Alonso with several issues to address, particularly his attacking selection, defensive organisation and tactical flexibility. Nevertheless, responsibility cannot rest entirely on the manager, as Penders' costly mistake and Palmer's dismissal were equally significant factors in Chelsea's disappointing performance.
