According to a report published by the Evening Standard on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he intends to discuss Cole Palmer’s sending-off with the midfielder after the Blues suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer was dismissed during Saturday’s London derby after picking up two yellow cards in under 10 minutes, adding to Chelsea’s difficulties in a disappointing performance against their rivals.
The England international was initially booked following an altercation involving Tottenham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. He then received a second yellow card for a foul on Conor Gallagher, resulting in his dismissal.
At the time of Palmer’s red card, Chelsea were already trailing after goalkeeper Mike Penders conceded an own goal on his first Premier League start. Tottenham went on to secure all three points when Mathys Tel scored an outstanding individual goal five minutes from the end of normal time.
Following the defeat, Alonso acknowledged the referee’s decision to send Palmer off, despite admitting that he had not personally revisited the incidents.
The Chelsea manager said he had received information suggesting that the decision was correct. He also insisted that his players must become more mature in their approach to difficult moments, particularly when matches are not going in their favour.
Alonso stated that he would examine the incidents before speaking privately with Palmer. According to the manager, the midfielder must take the experience as a lesson and ensure that he avoids making similar mistakes in future games.
He also stressed that discipline was especially important when Chelsea were chasing a result. Alonso explained that his side still had approximately 15 to 20 minutes to play after conceding the first goal and needed to maintain their composure rather than make decisions that could further damage their chances.
The Spaniard admitted that improving discipline remained a priority for the team, noting that he had already addressed the issue with his players during Friday’s preparations. He emphasised that footballers must understand how an early booking can influence their behaviour for the remainder of a match, describing this awareness as an essential part of individual and collective maturity.
Chelsea have faced disciplinary challenges over the past few seasons, and Alonso is keen to prevent the problem from continuing to affect the team’s results during the current campaign.
Palmer’s dismissal also means he will be unavailable for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup last-16 encounter against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, as he serves his suspension.
Chelsea will then prepare for a Premier League meeting with Manchester United next weekend. With Palmer unavailable for the cup fixture, Alonso will have to consider alternative attacking options while planning for the upcoming matches.
The midfielder recently signed a new long-term deal with Chelsea, demonstrating how highly the club values him. However, Alonso will expect him to learn from his costly mistake, respond constructively and help the team move forward as they look to recover from their defeat to Tottenham and improve their discipline in the games ahead.
