Frank Lampard Makes Chelsea Slip-Up During Coventry Interview After Tottenham Defeat

According to a report by The Athletic published on Friday, October 23, 2026, Coventry City manager Frank Lampard accidentally called his current club “Chelsea” during a post-match interview following his team's 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The mistake highlighted the lasting connection between the former England international and the club where he established himself as one of English football's greatest midfielders.

Lampard was discussing Coventry's performances and the difficulties his players have encountered while adapting to life in the Premier League. Having competed in the Championship last season, several members of his squad are still adjusting to the demands of facing experienced top-flight opponents.

The 47-year-old enjoyed an extraordinary playing career at Chelsea, where he spent 13 years and became the club's all-time leading goalscorer with 211 goals. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won three Premier League titles and played a crucial role in the club's Champions League triumph in 2012.

His relationship with Chelsea continued after his retirement from professional football, as he also managed the London club during two separate spells. Those experiences have cemented his status as one of the most recognisable figures in Chelsea's history.

However, Lampard's attention is now firmly on Coventry City, where he is attempting to establish the club among England's elite following their promotion to the top division.

Explaining his players' progress despite their limited experience at the highest level, Lampard said: "But when you think of eight of our starting players who were in the Championship team last year, they’ve had a tough start for different reasons, but they’re playing now."

He continued by comparing the two teams' performances and the experience within their squads, saying: "If you didn’t know, just Tottenham and Chelsea, uh Coventry here like this, you wouldn’t know to say who’s the team that have been in the Premier League for the last 50 years or who’s the team that’s been out of it for 25 years. And that, for me, is a big deal from what the players produce."

The accidental mention of Chelsea quickly attracted attention, as Lampard appeared to recognise the slip before correcting himself and returning to his intended point about Coventry.

The incident followed a disappointing result against Tottenham, giving Coventry another challenge as they continue adapting to Premier League football. Despite the defeat, Lampard remains focused on improving his squad, while his long-standing association with Chelsea continues to follow him throughout his managerial career.
