New Super Eagles Striker Makes First Statement After Helping Club End Losing Run

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Super Eagles striker George Ilenikhena attracted attention after delivering an impressive performance in Al-Ittihad’s 4-1 victory over Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League on Tuesday. The Nigerian-born forward scored once and provided an assist, earning the Man of the Match award as his side ended a run of two consecutive defeats.

Speaking to Saudi journalists after the match, Ilenikhena expressed his satisfaction with the team’s response to their recent setbacks. He explained that securing three points was important for rebuilding confidence and getting their league campaign back on track.

The 20-year-old emphasised the importance of reacting positively after disappointing results, describing the victory as a significant moment for the team.

He said the players understood how important it was to win after losing their previous two matches and were delighted with the way they responded on the pitch.

Ilenikhena had missed Al-Ittihad’s 3-2 defeat to Al-Hilal on October 10 because of an injury. Although he returned to action after recovering, the team subsequently suffered another setback, losing 2-1 to Shabab Al-Ahli.

However, the young striker rediscovered his best form against Al-Ettifaq, making a decisive contribution to the convincing victory. His goal and assist helped provide the attacking spark Al-Ittihad needed after their recent struggles.

Ilenikhena was substituted in the 73rd minute, making way for Moroccan forward Youssef En-Nesyri. The replacement proved productive, as En-Nesyri scored twice in the closing stages to complete the hosts’ 4-1 triumph.

Reflecting on the team’s performance and the manager’s decision to make changes, Ilenikhena stressed that every player must be prepared to contribute whenever called upon. He credited the collective effort and willingness of his teammates to work together for the result.

The forward explained that the coach made adjustments during the game and that everyone was ready to do whatever was necessary to help the team succeed. He identified this willingness to support one another as a major factor behind the victory.

Ilenikhena’s latest display also extends his impressive run of involvement in goals, having scored or provided an assist in each of his last four Saudi Pro League appearances, according to the report.

His growing consistency will be encouraging for Al-Ittihad as they seek to build momentum following their return to winning ways. The striker will also hope to maintain his form and strengthen his prospects of earning further opportunities with the Super Eagles.
