According to a report by BBC Sport on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Manchester United finally ended their nine-match winless streak after producing an extraordinary second-half comeback to defeat Roma 3-2 in Tuesday’s Champions League encounter at Old Trafford.
The hosts endured a disastrous opening, allowing Roma to take control early. Matias Soule broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, finishing Rodrigo Mora’s excellent pass beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United struggled to respond as Roma continued creating problems. Their situation worsened in the 17th minute when Ayden Heaven handled inside the penalty area, allowing Donyell Malen to convert from the spot.
Despite trailing by two goals, United attempted to recover before halftime. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo created opportunities, but Roma maintained their advantage throughout the opening 45 minutes.
The second half brought a different United performance, although Carlos Baleba suffered an injury and was replaced by Youri Tielemans in the 51st minute.
United received a lifeline in the 55th minute when Gianluca Mancini conceded a penalty. Fernandes initially missed, but encroachment allowed another attempt, which he converted in the 58th minute.
Bryan Mbeumo nearly equalised immediately afterwards, striking the left post with a delicate effort. United continued applying pressure as Roma struggled to contain their increasingly determined opponents.
The comeback was completed through Matheus Cunha, who equalised in the 83rd minute after connecting with Fernandes’ delivery before scoring again three minutes later following Shea Lacey’s assist.
Despite Cunha receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time, United held on for victory. The result delivered Carrick his first win after nine winless matches, ending their difficult run.
