According to a report by Metro on Wednesday November 4, 2026, after United's thrilling Champions League triumph over AS Roma, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney urged manager Michael Carrick to start teenage winger Shea Lacey instead of Amad Diallo.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, United rallied to beat Manchester City 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday. They hadn't won in nine matches prior to this one, and it was their first victory since September 10.
Bruno Fernandes started the comeback with a penalty kick conversion, and Matheus Cunha scored twice to finish it. Lacey, who entered the game in the 75th minute, also had a significant impact.
The youthful striker troubled Roma's defenses with his nimble footwork, pinpoint passes, and boundless energy on United's right wing. When he set up Cunha for the game-winning goal, his contribution was crucial.
After Amad had a hard time making an impression before getting substituted, Lacey's performance showed that United were lacking in attacking qualities on that side.
The international player from Ivory Coast has also taken heat for missing two golden chances in Manchester United's last loss to Chelsea. In all competitions since December of last year, he has only managed two assists and has not scored a goal for the club.
Lacey, on the other hand, has made a stronger case for his continued participation. In September, he made a big splash when he scored his first senior goal in a thrilling Carabao Cup match against Brighton.
While Amad's inability to make decisive contributions is a cause for concern, Rooney sees the youngster as a viable alternative due to his effectiveness in attacking situations.
Commending Lacey's contribution to the game-winning goal, Rooney exclaimed: "That's a great touch inside and a wonderful pass, and the finish is incredible."
The former United captain elaborated that the chance was created by an outstanding pass from Lacey after his initial touch had already dispossessed the defender.
Although Rooney did not deny that Amad has many admirable traits, he maintained that, in order to advance, Amad must enhance his final contribution.
