According to a report by London Evening Standard on Sunday November 1, 2026, The Premier League has explained why Noni Madueke escaped a second yellow card and a potential red during Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
The winger was already booked when he confronted Alexis Mac Allister late in Sunday’s match, but VAR decided his actions did not amount to violent conduct.
The incident happened after Mac Allister fouled Martin Odegaard. Arsenal were awarded a free-kick near their own penalty area, but the Liverpool midfielder was unhappy with the decision. He exchanged words with Odegaard, who was on the ground, and appeared to tap the Arsenal captain on the head.
Madueke quickly approached Mac Allister, and the pair stood face-to-face. The confrontation raised questions about whether the Arsenal winger should have received another booking. He had already been cautioned, meaning a second yellow card would have resulted in his dismissal.
However, referee Andy Madley chose not to punish Madueke. Instead, Mac Allister and Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber were shown yellow cards. The Premier League’s match centre later clarified that the winger avoided a red card because his conduct was not viewed as aggressive or violent.
The statement confirmed that VAR had reviewed the referee’s decision and supported it. It said there was contact as the players squared up, but it was not forceful, violent or brutal enough to constitute violent conduct.
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, who was working as a co-commentator for Sky Sports, backed the decision. He criticised Mac Allister for going down too easily and praised VAR for not recommending a red card.
Neville described the Liverpool midfielder’s reaction as embarrassing, adding that the officials had recognised the situation correctly. Madueke remained on the pitch as Arsenal protected their advantage and secured a win at Anfield.
