Manchester United have decided to give Michael Carrick another opportunity to turn around the club’s disappointing season, with the head coach set to remain in charge for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.
According to a report by the Evening Standard on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, United’s hierarchy have opted against making an immediate managerial change despite mounting pressure on Carrick following a difficult spell that has seen the team go eight consecutive matches without a win.
The former Manchester United midfielder had been widely expected to lose his position after recent defeats against Como and Bournemouth. However, the club have now decided to allow him more time to improve the team’s performances.
Carrick is therefore expected to lead United from the dugout when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, with the players continuing their preparations as normal.
Sources within the club have reportedly indicated that the squad remain committed to working together and finding a solution to their current problems on the pitch.
The decision follows an important meeting between Carrick and senior executives Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada at Carrington on Monday, where they discussed the team’s poor form and the club’s immediate plans.
Following the discussions, Carrick also watched Manchester United’s Under-21 side take on Hull City.
Although the club have decided against an immediate dismissal, uncertainty remains over his long-term future, with United reportedly exploring alternative managerial options.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann are among the names believed to have attracted interest from the club’s senior officials.
Carrick’s difficult spell has also raised questions about United’s recruitment strategy. Despite making significant investments in three midfielders during the transfer window, the club failed to strengthen other positions that have been identified as areas of concern.
There have also been signs of frustration within the squad, with captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Lisandro Martinez previously expressing concerns about the club’s direction.
The upcoming meeting with Chelsea could therefore represent a significant opportunity for Carrick to ease the pressure and restore confidence among supporters.
Chelsea will also be looking to bounce back from their recent derby defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. However, they have injury concerns surrounding Reece James and Joao Pedro and must first negotiate their Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool.
After travelling to Stamford Bridge, Manchester United will welcome Roma in the Champions League before facing Aston Villa in the Premier League ahead of the November international break.
Those fixtures could ultimately determine whether Carrick can turn United’s season around and convince the club’s hierarchy that he remains the right man to lead the team.
