Steven Gerrard has criticised Wesley Fofana following another unconvincing performance for Chelsea, questioning the defender's concentration after his mistakes against Manchester United.
According to a report by The Athletic on Monday, 2 November 2026, the former Liverpool captain jokingly described Fofana as Manchester United's best player during the first half of Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea secured an important victory through goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, but Fofana's performance attracted criticism despite the positive result.
The French defender was given an opportunity to start after Maxence Lacroix suffered a hamstring injury during Chelsea's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.
However, Fofana struggled during the opening 45 minutes and gifted possession to Amad Diallo while Chelsea were attempting to play out from the back.
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard assessed Manchester United's performance and highlighted Fofana's difficulties.
“They [Man United] were fantastic in the first half. Carrick picked the right team,” he said.
“They could have gone in two or three up; they looked dangerous, organised, much better than Chelsea. Fofana was United’s best player in the first half; he kept getting robbed. Game of two halves for sure.”
Fofana's latest struggles have added to concerns surrounding his consistency at Chelsea. The defender previously conceded a penalty against Liverpool shortly after Rogers had scored from the spot, before missing his attempt in the subsequent penalty shootout.
He has also endured disciplinary problems, including red cards against Burnley and Sunderland last season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso faces a difficult decision over his defensive options ahead of Saturday's trip to Sunderland.
With Lacroix expected to remain sidelined until 2027, Chelsea have limited choices at centre-back. Levi Colwill remains an option, while Aaron Anselmino is working towards returning to full fitness.
Tayo Subuloye is another possibility, with some supporters believing the academy defender deserves an opportunity.
Fofana could still retain his place against Sunderland, but his recent performances have raised questions about whether Alonso should continue trusting him.
