According to a report by Football London on Thursday October 22, 2026, after manager Xabi Alonso suggested that Liverpool's upper management look into signing German international Florian Wirtz next summer, Chelsea is allegedly keeping tabs on the situation at the club.
Rumor has it that the Blues have started keeping tabs on the 23-year-old midfielder's situation at Anfield, but they aren't in negotiations to sign him just yet.
Alonso knows what it's like to play with Wirtz because they were teammates at Bayer Leverkusen, where Wirtz blossomed into one of the most promising attacking players in Europe.
According to reports, Chelsea's manager thinks his team should be ready to compete if Liverpool thinks about letting their expensive summer signing leave.
Wirtz was pursued by numerous European powerhouses, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City, before he signed with Liverpool. The Merseyside club reportedly paid up to £116 million to sign him.
Liverpool's upper management is adamant that they want to see a return on their investment because they think the German has what it takes to be a Premier League sensation.
Nevertheless, if his performances fall short of expectations, patience may become a challenge. Already, Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, has cast doubt on Wirtz's continued regular playing time in the wake of his adaptation issues.
The criticism doesn't seem to have deterred Wirtz from his goal of making a name for himself at Anfield. On Tuesday, he scored his first goal for Liverpool in a thrilling 4-3 win over Villarreal. He has now recorded three assists for the season.
Not only are Chelsea keeping a careful eye on developments, but so are other clubs. If the midfielder's future with Liverpool becomes more uncertain, Bayern Munich, who were reportedly interested in signing him before, may rethink their stance.
Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Bradley Barcola, and Rio Ngumoha are all attacking options for Liverpool, so the club needs to think about its future roster plans carefully.
Still, Liverpool has not made a public announcement regarding the sale of Wirtz. Any possible transfer would be contingent upon his performances and Liverpool's openness to negotiations, but Chelsea is still in an exploratory phase of their interest.
Chelsea may consider Alonso's relationship with Wirtz a deciding factor in their pursuit of the highly regarded German playmaker next summer, should certain conditions change.
