According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick appeared unhappy with Matheus Cunha after directing the Brazilian forward away from his teammates' celebrations following their 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma.
United completed a remarkable comeback at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after recovering from a two-goal deficit to secure an important victory in front of their home supporters.
Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit by converting a penalty in the 58th minute before Cunha became the hero with two late goals that turned the contest around.
However, the Brazilian's celebrations took an unexpected turn after he received a red card during the closing stages of the encounter.
Following his decisive goal, Cunha removed his shirt and jumped into the crowd to celebrate with the supporters. The action earned him a yellow card from the referee.
His disciplinary problems continued in the first minute of added time when he committed a late challenge and received a second booking, resulting in his dismissal.
Despite United having to finish the match with 10 players, Carrick's team managed to protect their advantage and claim all three points.
Cunha subsequently returned towards the pitch to celebrate alongside his teammates at full-time, but Carrick appeared to instruct him to leave the area and head straight to the dressing room.
The forward looked visibly frustrated as he walked towards the tunnel, with a club official accompanying him. Television footage also showed him appearing to shout angrily in the direction of the pitch.
The incident attracted attention because Cunha had played a decisive role in securing the victory before his late dismissal.
However, the laws of football require dismissed players to leave the vicinity of the field of play and technical area. Consequently, Cunha was not permitted to return to the pitch after receiving his red card.
Carrick's attention was otherwise focused on the significance of United's comeback, particularly after the team had struggled during the opening 45 minutes.
The manager explained that he had encouraged his players to remain positive at half-time rather than allow frustration to affect their performance.
He also reminded them of Old Trafford's history of dramatic European nights, believing that one important moment could change the direction of the contest.
United eventually produced the response he wanted, with Cunha's late contributions completing a memorable victory.
