Atletico Manager Simeone Explains Why Raphinha Makes Barcelona Harder to Defend Than Lewandowski

Diego Simeone has explained why Barcelona have become more difficult to defend against with Raphinha playing, according to a report by Sports Mole on November 7, 2026,. The Atletico Madrid manager believes the Brazilian's movement creates different defensive challenges compared to Robert Lewandowski. His assessment comes ahead of Sunday's crucial La Liga clash between both clubs.

Simeone praised Raphinha's attacking qualities. The tactician described the Barcelona forward as an extraordinary footballer whose work rate, pace, goals and assists have significantly contributed to his team's performances.

It should be noted that Raphinha has reportedly enjoyed an impressive beginning to the 2026/27 campaign. He has already scored 19 goals in 13 appearances across competitions. His versatility in different attacking positions under Hansi Flick has also provided Barcelona with additional tactical options.

Simeone believes Lewandowski's previous role as a conventional centre-forward made Barcelona easier to defend against. The Polish striker typically occupied central positions inside the penalty area. This provides defenders with a more predictable attacking reference point.

However, Raphinha's movement has reportedly changed that situation considerably. Unlike Lewandowski, the Brazilian frequently drops into midfield, operates between defensive lines and moves into different attacking spaces. This makes it more difficult for opponents to maintain their defensive organisation.

Simeone also explained that Raphinha's ability to operate as an attacking midfielder allows Barcelona to create numerical advantages in midfield while maintaining attacking depth.

Despite these tactical differences, the Atletico manager maintained that Barcelona have not abandoned their established playing philosophy under Flick. The Spanish champions continue to rely on aggressive pressing, a high defensive line and their ability to recover possession quickly.

Barcelona currently hold a two-point advantage over Atletico Madrid ahead of Sunday's encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The result could therefore prove significant in the race for the La Liga leadership. This is because Simeone's boys are capable of overtaking the defending champions with victory.
