According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, November 6, 2026, Barcelona’s decision to retain Brian Farinas is paying off, with the 20-year-old impressing in consecutive appearances at Barcelona’s senior level under Hansi Flick.
Farinas began the season facing an uncertain role despite joining the senior squad and receiving the No. 4 shirt previously worn by Ronald Araujo. Regular selection proved difficult, and he was often omitted when Flick trimmed his matchday group. His prospects appeared less certain after Girona showed interest during the summer window.
The Catalan club reportedly considered an offer of €1.5 million for 50 per cent of Farinas’ economic rights. Flick preferred to keep the youngster after assessing his versatility, understanding of the game and attitude during pre-season. That decision gave the academy graduate another opportunity, although his breakthrough did not arrive immediately.
When selected against Deportivo Alaves, Flick used him at right-back rather than in midfield, the position in which he had developed at La Masia. Farinas responded with a composed display in Barcelona’s 6-1 victory. He completed 101 passes, recovered possession six times and linked effectively with Lamine Yamal down the right.
He carried that confidence into the Champions League meeting with Aston Villa, making his European debut against opponents who had won their first three matches in the competition. Farinas handled pressure well, showed defensive awareness and continued to support Yamal in attacking moves.
His involvement in the final third was notable. He completed 11 passes in that area, matching Pedri’s total, and offered Barcelona another route to progress the ball. The performances have strengthened the case for keeping him at the club.
Farinas’ ability to cover different roles could be useful across a demanding campaign, particularly while Flick manages defensive availability. His minutes may reduce when injured players return, but he has demonstrated that he can provide cover beyond his natural midfield position.
After his debut, Farinas said Flick had asked whether he was comfortable playing at right-back. He said he was prepared to take on any role the manager required, an attitude that has helped him earn the coach’s trust.
