Nigeria’s 16-Year-Old Forward Wins Player of the Match Award After Superb Performance

Nigeria’s young forward, Oluebube Umejiaku, has received the Player of the Match award following her impressive display in the Flamingos’ 2-1 win over Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

According to a report published by FIFA.com on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the 16-year-old striker played a crucial role in helping Nigeria secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Umejiaku, who plays for Heartland Queens FC, opened the scoring in the encounter with a well-timed goal in the 40th minute. Her contribution gave the Nigerian side an important advantage after both teams had competed strongly during the opening period.

The young attacker has maintained an impressive scoring record in Morocco, having previously found the net against Poland and defending champions Korea DPR during the group-stage matches.

Nigeria strengthened their position in the contest when Dunstan scored the second goal in the 71st minute, putting the Flamingos two goals ahead and giving them greater control of the match.

Mexico refused to give up and eventually found the back of the net through Emily Deigado in the 90th minute, with the goal recorded at 90+10. However, the Mexican team could not find another equaliser as Nigeria successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

Umejiaku’s Player of the Match recognition reflects her growing influence within the Nigerian squad, particularly her ability to deliver important goals during decisive encounters.

Born in 2010, the teenager has displayed confidence, attacking ability and composure throughout the tournament, further attracting attention with her performances on the international stage.
