Manchester United are reportedly considering a January move for RB Leipzig captain David Raum as manager Michael Carrick seeks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the second half of the season.
According to a report by Football London on Saturday, October 24, 2026, citing Daily Briefing, the Germany international has become one of the club’s priority targets as they look to improve their options at left-back and centre-back.
Raum is understood to be interested in experiencing Premier League football, while his current contract situation could encourage United to pursue a deal during the winter transfer window.
The 28-year-old is contracted to Leipzig until the summer of 2027. With his agreement approaching its final year, the Bundesliga club could face the risk of losing him for a reduced fee or nothing if they fail to secure an extension.
United are reportedly in a strong position to explore the transfer, with individuals close to the defender suggesting he would be open to joining the Old Trafford side.
Raum has established himself as an experienced left-sided defender, offering both defensive qualities and an attacking threat through his crossing and ability to contribute in the final third. His arrival could give Carrick another option as United attempt to improve their consistency.
However, Raum is not the only defender being considered. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is also on United’s radar, although his situation at the Spanish club could influence any potential move. Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert is another player being monitored.
Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite remains an attractive option for the Manchester club, but his reported £80 million valuation could make negotiations difficult in January.
Raum’s performances have attracted recognition from Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal, who identified him as the toughest opponent he had faced.
“David Raum has been the toughest opponent I’ve had to face. In the Euros, against Germany, he was tough to beat. A solid defender,” Yamal said.
Former Leipzig manager Marco Rose has also praised the defender, describing him as an “important player” and highlighting his mentality, tackling ability and contribution to creating assists.
At 28, Raum could offer United an experienced signing capable of making an immediate impact rather than a player who would need several years to develop.
The reported interest underlines United’s determination to address defensive concerns in January. However, no agreement has been reached, and a potential transfer remains at the rumour stage.
