How Arsenal Outmanoeuvred Liverpool to Break 14-Year Anfield Curse

According to a report by Evening Standard on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Arsenal finally ended their 14-year Premier League losing streak at Anfield with a historic 1-0 victory, thanks to their stout defense and tactical discipline.

After taking an early lead through Kai Havertz, Mikel Arteta's team had to weather constant pressure from the hosts. However, Liverpool were unable to reclaim the lead thanks to the hosts' well-organized defense.

It was especially meaningful for Arsenal because Arteta was the lone traveler who had witnessed a Premier League triumph for the club at Anfield before. Two 5-1 losses and two 4-0 losses were among the many tough trips that the Gunners had to endure throughout the years.

Havertz scored Arsenal's first goal after a good attacking move by the visitors. Arsenal got off to a good start.

But Liverpool hit back with a slew of pressure in the minutes leading up to halftime, making Arsenal dig in and battle for possession.

Alexis Mac Allister and Alexander Isak both had good chances for the home team, but they were unable to capitalize on them. While Isak's effort missed the mark, Mac Allister's sailed over the crossbar.

After attempting to calm his players down at first, Arteta grew more animated as Liverpool kept pressing.

Arsenal stayed disciplined defensively despite having trouble retaining the ball and losing multiple individual duels. Their backs stepped in time and time again to block Liverpool from scoring.

Even though Liverpool attacked in front of the Kop end of the stadium in the second half, the visitors' better defensive control helped to limit the danger.

Despite a shaky start, Ezri Konsa came through with a stellar performance, fearlessly rushing into dangerous situations. To keep Arsenal's lead intact, defensive players Jurrien Timber and Gabriel were instrumental.

The effectiveness of Arsenal's defense was on full display as none of Liverpool's 17 shots forced goalkeeper David Raya into a save.

The Gunners' experience shone through as they won 18 fouls and were able to draw free kicks, which helped alleviate pressure during tough times.

The win was a further indication of Arsenal's improvement under Arteta, and it ended their long-running rivalry at Anfield. According to the article, the team scored seven more points in the same number of games this season compared to the previous one.

The result was secured by Arsenal due to their discipline, defensive strength, and ability to withstand pressure on one of the most difficult away grounds in the Premier League, even though the performance was not dominant.
