According to a report published by The Standard on October 22, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly contacted Julian Nagelsmann to explore the possibility of appointing him as manager if they decide to dismiss Michael Carrick following the club’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Carrick is under growing pressure after United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. The loss extended their winless streak to seven matches across all competitions, leaving the team with only two victories from their opening 11 games this season. The results have raised serious questions about the club’s direction under the current manager.
United initially expected Carrick to build on the positive performances he delivered while serving as interim manager last season. However, the team’s recent decline has increased uncertainty at Old Trafford. Criticism from senior players Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes has also intensified concerns surrounding the atmosphere within the squad.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League encounter against Bournemouth. The fixture could become a significant moment in determining his future, particularly if United fail to produce an improved performance.
According to GiveMeSport senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, the club have already made preliminary contact with Nagelsmann regarding the possibility of taking over should they decide to make a managerial change.
The 39-year-old is reportedly willing to consider the opportunity if United formally approach him. He has been without a club since leaving his position as Germany’s national team manager in the summer, making him an available candidate for the Premier League giants.
Nagelsmann previously managed Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, establishing himself as one of Europe’s highly regarded coaches. During his Bayern tenure, he recorded 60 victories, 14 draws and 10 defeats in 84 matches, achieving an impressive win rate of approximately 71.4 per cent.
Antonio Conte has also emerged as another potential candidate. The Italian has won league titles with Chelsea and several Serie A championships. However, his demanding management style and previous disagreements with club executives could complicate his appointment at Old Trafford.
United may therefore view Nagelsmann as an attractive alternative because of his experience developing younger players and building competitive teams. His tactical approach could appeal to the club’s leadership as they consider a longer-term rebuilding project.
Nevertheless, no decision has been announced, and Carrick remains expected to lead United against Bournemouth.
