LIV 4-3 VIL: Match Review and UEFA Champions League Table Update

According to a report by BBC SPORT on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Liverpool produced an impressive comeback to defeat Villarreal 4-3 in a thrilling Champions League encounter on Tuesday.

The Reds recovered from an early two-goal deficit before Alexis Mac Allister, Ronald Araujo, and Florian Wirtz helped turn the contest around. However, Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi's late strike ensured a tense finish at the end of an entertaining encounter.

Villarreal made a dream start when Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a defensive mistake in the fourth minute. The forward collected the loose ball before calmly slotting it past Alisson to give the visitors an early advantage. Liverpool attempted to respond through Rio Ngumoha and Ryan Gravenberch, but Villarreal remained dangerous on the counterattack.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 29th minute. Nathan Saliba supplied Sergi Cardona inside the penalty area, allowing the defender to finish accurately into the bottom-left corner. Liverpool needed a response, and Mac Allister provided it seven minutes later by heading home Konstantinos Tsimikas' corner.

The Reds completed their first-half recovery in stoppage time when Araujo connected with Ngumoha's excellent cross and directed a header inside the right post to make it 2-2.

Liverpool introduced Florian Wirtz at the start of the second half, and the change helped strengthen their attacking play. Mac Allister completed the turnaround in the 65th minute after Ngumoha delivered the ball into the penalty area. The Argentine midfielder controlled the opportunity and fired into the roof of the net.

Wirtz extended Liverpool's advantage three minutes later, finishing confidently into the bottom-right corner after Cody Gakpo's intelligent pass. The goal gave the hosts a two-goal cushion and placed them in a commanding position.

Villarreal refused to surrender, however. Alisson produced an excellent save to deny Pape Gueye before Oluwaseyi reduced the deficit in the 87th minute. The striker controlled Ayoze Perez's superb lofted pass and fired into the bottom-left corner.

Liverpool survived the closing minutes to secure a memorable 4-3 victory. Despite Villarreal's spirited performance, the hosts' attacking quality and second-half improvement ultimately proved decisive.
