According to a report by ESPN on Friday, October 23, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos delivered an outstanding performance to defeat defending champions Korea DPR 3-1 in their final Group B fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The victory strengthened Nigeria’s position in the competition and secured their place in the knockout stage after a challenging start to the tournament.
The Nigerian team entered the encounter under pressure following a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening match. However, the Flamingos recovered by recording a convincing 2-0 win over Puerto Rico before completing their group campaign with an impressive victory against the reigning champions.
Nigeria took the lead in the 15th minute when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi found the back of the net. The early goal provided the team with confidence as they continued to apply pressure on their opponents. Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 38th minute, ensuring the Flamingos entered the halftime break with a comfortable two-goal lead.
The Nigerian side maintained their attacking momentum after the restart, with Yusuf scoring the third goal in the 56th minute. Korea DPR attempted to respond and eventually reduced the deficit through Yu Jong-hyang, who converted a penalty in the 82nd minute. Nevertheless, Nigeria remained composed during the closing stages to secure a memorable 3-1 triumph.
The result left Nigeria, Korea DPR and Poland with six points each after three group matches, making the final standings highly competitive. Korea DPR had previously defeated Puerto Rico and Poland, while Nigeria recovered from their opening loss to win their remaining two fixtures. Poland also registered two victories, including their opening win against Nigeria.
Despite the three teams finishing on equal points, Korea DPR claimed first place based on overall goal difference, while Nigeria secured second position ahead of Poland. Puerto Rico finished at the bottom of the group after losing all three matches.
Nigeria’s victory represents an important achievement, particularly considering Korea DPR’s status as defending champions. The Flamingos demonstrated resilience, improved attacking quality and determination to overcome their earlier disappointment.
With the group stage concluded, Nigeria will now prepare for the Round of 16, hoping to maintain their winning momentum and progress into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
