According to a report by Football London on Saturday, 31 October 2026, Cole Palmer made a point of congratulating Romeo Lavia after the midfielder delivered an impressive performance in Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on Saturday.
Palmer was spotted approaching Lavia immediately after the final whistle to recognise his contribution to Chelsea's important victory.
The Belgian midfielder played a significant role as Xabi Alonso's side returned to winning ways following their Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and Carabao Cup elimination against Liverpool.
Lavia was instrumental in Chelsea's opening goal, winning possession before releasing Morgan Rogers, who produced an excellent finish shortly after half-time. Palmer later converted a penalty to secure the victory.
The midfielder's performance was particularly encouraging considering his injury struggles since joining Chelsea from Southampton in 2023.
The 22-year-old has struggled to maintain consistency because of recurring fitness problems, but he has now completed 90 minutes in consecutive matches against Liverpool and Manchester United.
Palmer's gesture after the game highlighted the appreciation within the Chelsea dressing room for Lavia's contribution.
The England international also enjoyed an encouraging afternoon, bouncing back from his red card against Tottenham with a goal and an improved overall performance.
Lavia's statistics against Manchester United further demonstrated his importance. According to Sofascore, he completed 64 of his 71 attempted passes, recording a 90 per cent passing accuracy.
He also created one big chance, registered two key passes and made nine defensive contributions.
The Belgian won four of his five attempted tackles and recorded four interceptions, making more defensive contributions than any other player in the match.
His ability to protect Chelsea's defence while progressing the ball into attacking areas was crucial to Alonso's midfield performance.
Chelsea will now turn their attention to their Premier League trip to Sunderland on Sunday, 8 November.
Lavia will hope to maintain his fitness and build on his recent performances as Alonso looks to establish greater consistency in his midfield.
