According to a report by Metro on Thursday October 22, 2026, Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has decided against replacing Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager if the position ever becomes vacant.
As per reports, the latter would not be interested in the post despite apparently attracting the interest of some people in the hierarchy of the Red Devils.
Manchester United are currently considering their options as far as a new manager is concerned after a disastrous sequence of results which saw them suffer a 4-1 Champions League shock defeat at the hands of Como on Wednesday.
The dismal draw extended United’s winless run to seven games in all competitions, and has placed Carrick under immense pressure after growing concerns that the 53-year-old is destined to be sacked after his managerial career goes into freefall.
Hurzeler had been one of the potential candidates to take over at Old Trafford, but it appears that the German’s hesitance to leave Brighton could see United have to turn to other options.
According to the Sun, Brighton are confident that they will be able to retain Hurzeler should Manchester United make a move for him. As per the report, the German does not have a release clause in his deal with the Seagulls which could hamper any potential transfer.
Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich manager, has also been linked with the job, with Eddie Howe, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte also being considered for the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick has seen his stock steadily drop since the start of the season, with United suffering consecutive defeats in the Premier League and Champions League.
Carrick’s men are currently 13 th in the English top flight and have struggled to find any form this season.
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, believes that the defeat to Como could prove to be pivotal for Carrick, with the former stating that another managerial change could be on the cards.
However, ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to give Carrick more time to find his feet, with the latter having enjoyed great success in his first season in charge of the Red Devils.
With Manchester United still considering their options, Hurzeler’s decision to turn down the chance to manage at Old Trafford could limit their choices in the search for a new manager.
For now, Carrick remains in charge, with Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth offering the opportunity for his charges to respond to their European nightmare.
