According to a report by Football London on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry was denied an opportunity to make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge after being left on the bench during Sporting CP's Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday evening.
The 19-year-old winger joined the Portuguese club on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window after signing a new long-term contract with Chelsea.
The Blues decided to send the highly-rated youngster away to gain valuable first-team experience and continue his development before returning to Stamford Bridge next summer.
However, Derry has struggled to secure regular playing time since arriving in Portugal, raising questions about whether the loan move is providing the opportunities Chelsea expected.
According to Football London, the Chelsea academy graduate had managed just one start for Sporting CP this season, which came in the Allianz Cup against Maritimo.
He played 73 minutes in that encounter but was subsequently an unused substitute in the following matches against Casa Pia and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Sporting's Champions League fixture against Shakhtar was particularly significant because it was played at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's home ground.
The Ukrainian club reached an agreement with Chelsea to use the west London stadium as their temporary home for European fixtures this season because they have been unable to play at their traditional Donbass Arena since 2014.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Shakhtar have been forced to find alternative venues for their home matches and selected London for their European campaign.
The arrangement presented Derry with a special opportunity to return to the stadium where he began his professional career and potentially face familiar faces around the club.
Unfortunately, the teenager remained on the substitutes' bench for the entire 90 minutes as Sporting secured a crucial 1-0 victory.
Derry will now be hoping to get more opportunities in the coming weeks, particularly with Sporting preparing for a managerial change.
The Portuguese club recently parted ways with manager Rui Borges, while former Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca is expected to take over at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
The managerial change could provide Derry with a fresh opportunity to impress and establish himself in the first team.
Chelsea will also be hoping the teenager benefits from the situation, having sent him to Portugal with the expectation that he would gain regular senior football.
The Blues remain interested in his development and will continue monitoring his progress before he returns to Cobham next summer.
Derry signed a new contract with Chelsea in July, committing his future to the club until 2032.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, the winger described the agreement as a dream come true and expressed his excitement about being part of Chelsea's long-term project.
"It's a dream come true, obviously, to commit my future to such a big club like Chelsea," he said.
The youngster also made it clear that he wanted to contribute to the club's future success after getting a taste of first-team football.
Derry made three senior appearances for Chelsea last season, with his debut coming in February under former manager Liam Rosenior.
He was introduced during the closing stages of the Blues' 4-0 FA Cup victory over Hull City before making another substitute appearance in the win against Wrexham.
He also made his Premier League debut in May under interim head coach Calum McFarlane.
However, that appearance ended painfully after he suffered a head injury following a collision and was stretchered off before being taken to hospital.
Fortunately, the injury was not serious, and he returned to Chelsea's substitutes' bench a couple of weeks later.
