According to a report by Premium Times on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Victor Osimhen caught the attention of football fans during Galatasaray’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Lille after choosing to acknowledge the home supporters rather than celebrate his goal in the usual fashion.
The Super Eagles forward scored in the 61st minute of Wednesday’s encounter, helping Galatasaray secure an important away win. However, his reaction after finding the net became a major talking point, with his gesture highlighting the bond he still shares with the French club’s supporters.
Instead of celebrating wildly with his teammates, Osimhen raised his hands towards the Lille fans, seemingly showing appreciation for the support he received during his time at the club.
The 27-year-old represented Lille during the 2019/2020 campaign after joining from Belgian side Charleroi. He quickly made an impression in France, establishing himself as one of Europe’s promising young strikers through his goalscoring ability, pace and movement.
Osimhen scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions during his single season with Lille. His performances attracted interest from several prominent European clubs and eventually earned him a transfer to Napoli in 2020.
He continued his development in Italy, becoming one of the continent’s most feared forwards and playing a crucial role in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign in the 2022/2023 season.
His return to face Lille in the Champions League therefore carried special significance, giving him the opportunity to come up against a club that played an important part in his rise to prominence.
By acknowledging the home supporters after scoring, Osimhen appeared to demonstrate that he still values the experience and support he received during his time in France, despite having moved on to achieve further success elsewhere.
His goal was also vital for Galatasaray, who were eager to strengthen their position in the Champions League. The Turkish side produced an entertaining attacking performance to claim victory after a fiercely contested encounter.
Galatasaray initially took the lead through Yunus Akgün, but Lille responded through Soriba Diaoune, who scored twice to put the hosts ahead. Aleksey Batrakov then restored parity before the Turkish side regained control after the interval.
Osimhen’s strike helped Galatasaray secure the 4-2 victory, while his overall contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.
The Nigerian striker remained a constant threat to Lille’s defence, using his movement and attacking presence to create problems throughout the contest.
He also received a warm reception from Lille supporters when he was substituted late in the match, further underlining the appreciation he continues to enjoy among the club’s fans.
Ultimately, Osimhen’s reaction after scoring provided a reminder that professional footballers can maintain strong connections with former clubs even when competing against them. While his goal was crucial to Galatasaray’s success, his gesture towards Lille’s supporters reflected his appreciation for a club that helped shape his career.
