According to a report by Metro on Wednesday October 21, 2026, former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes Manchester United defender Leny Yoro would be thriving at Liverpool if he had chosen to join the Merseyside club instead of moving to Old Trafford.
Yoro joined Manchester United from Lille in 2024 for a reported £52 million fee after attracting interest from several European clubs, including Real Madrid. The Frenchman was regarded as one of Europe's most promising young defenders, but his development has been affected by injuries, inconsistent performances and changes in his defensive position.
The 20-year-old has recently started three consecutive matches as a makeshift right-back, despite being primarily a centre-back. He was also sent off during Manchester United's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Speaking to Betfred, Petit compared Yoro's situation with that of fellow Frenchman Jérémy Jacquet, who he believes has impressed since joining Liverpool.
“Jeremy Jacquet has been brilliant so far for Liverpool and it was the same during the international break because he impressed a lot, honestly. Everything is good for him, he's full of confidence and you can see that,” Petit said.
He explained that Yoro has faced different challenges, including injuries and uncertainty over his position.
Petit also questioned whether Manchester United's wider struggles have made it harder for the young defender to reach his potential.
“When you look at the lack of stability of the club he's playing for and the lack of confidence around the group, is it Leny Yoro's responsibility to raise his level when you see other players who are also not playing at a high level?” he said.
The former France international also criticised the leadership situation at Old Trafford, expressing his dissatisfaction with Bruno Fernandes' body language and arguing that Manchester United are missing important leaders.
