Emi Martinez has returned to Chelsea training as he steps up his recovery from a fractured jaw, providing manager Xabi Alonso with a significant boost ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Sunderland.
According to a report by The Athletic on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, the Argentina international has resumed training at Cobham after undergoing surgery following a serious collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
The incident occurred during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on October 17. Martinez required lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off and replaced by Mike Penders.
The 34-year-old was initially assessed for a possible concussion before undergoing surgery to repair his fractured jaw. He subsequently missed Chelsea's last three matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester United.
However, Martinez has now returned to gym work with the first-team squad and was also spotted participating in a training session while wearing heavy protective padding around his jaw.
His recovery could put him in contention to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, although Chelsea will need to assess his physical condition before making a decision.
Martinez had reportedly been pushing to return earlier than initially expected after suggesting he would be "back in a few weeks".
His potential availability presents Alonso with an important decision regarding Chelsea's goalkeeping position.
The Spanish manager pushed for Martinez's arrival from Aston Villa in August in a deal worth £7.5 million, viewing the experienced goalkeeper as an upgrade on Robert Sanchez, who joined Como on a season-long loan.
However, Penders has taken advantage of Martinez's absence, making three consecutive appearances and responding positively after his costly mistake against Tottenham.
The Belgian goalkeeper delivered impressive performances against Liverpool and Manchester United, strengthening his case for a regular starting position.
Martinez has made six Premier League appearances since joining Chelsea, conceding 11 goals.
Although Alonso is expected to restore the Argentine to his starting XI once he is fully fit, Penders' recent displays have given the manager a credible alternative.
Martinez's return therefore provides Chelsea with an important selection boost while creating greater competition for the club's No. 1 position ahead of the next phase of the season.
